Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) in the UN Headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in the Terminology and Reference Unit of the Translation and Editorial Section (TES) in the Division of Conference Services (DCS), UNON.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Chief, TES, and direct supervision of the Chief, Terminology and Reference Unit (TRU), the incumbent will facilitate translation and editing processes by performing the following duties:
(1) Referencing of documents:
(a) Provide references, terminology and pertinent information to translators and editors on documentation;
(b) Furnish answers, information and specific terminology and reference inquiries from translators and editors;
(c) Conduct electronic research to provide language versions of acronyms, quotations and background documents;
(d) Liaise with the main UNEP library, relevant departments and /or specialized agencies to obtain specialized reference material and information.
(e) Upload referenced jobs into the Document Control and Performance Monitoring System (DCPMS)
(2) Contributing to UNONTerm database:
(a) Collect information to ensure a wide variety of available data on different topics covered by DCS clients;
(b) Identify new and changed terminologies extracted from translated material.
(3) Enhance and promote high quality translation of documents emanating from UNEP, UN-Habitat and UNON.
(4) Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.

Education
Completion of Secondary School education; supplemental training in the area of library and information technology will be an added benefit.
Work Experience
Five years of experience in document processing is required. Working experience in the UN is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official language of the UN is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
